Pet Insurance FAQs

Pet Insurance FAQs

What is Pet insurance?
Pet Insurance provides cover for unforeseen veterinary costs arising from medical treatment for your Pet. Our policy is underwritten by Amlin Syndicate 2001 at Lloyds.
What cover levels are available?
Essential Cover : Cat/Dog Accident cover and Liability for Dogs only. Premier Cover : 12 Months Cover. Premier Plus Cover : Lifetime Cover (continued cover for medical condition occurring within the policy term.
Essential Cover
This level provides cover for veterinary fees resulting from accidental injury only of your dog and cat and for third party liability for your dog only.
Premier Cover
Our Premier policy covers your pet for a 12 month period. If your pet suffers from an illness/injury during the policy period (but excluding accident related injuries within the first 14 days of when you initially start the policy), the Vet fees will be covered for 12 months from the date the injury/illness occurred, subject to renewal of your policy. After those 12 months the medical condition will be deemed pre-existing and will be excluded. Our Premier policy also provides cover for Third Party Liability (Dogs only), Death from Accident, Boarding Kennel/Cattery Fees, Theft /Straying, Holiday Cancellation and Lost/Found ads. We also offer optional cover for Overseas Cover which includes Quarantine, Emergency Repatriation and Loss of Passport.
Premier Plus Cover
Our Premier Plus policy covers veterinary fees for life (but excluding accident related injuries within the first 14 days of when you initially start the policy) and is designed for pet owners concerned about their pet developing a long-term, chronic or recurring illness. Premier Plus Cover includes such conditions as arthritis or eczema which require treatment from a vet over a long period of time, often for life. As long as the Premier Plus policy is renewed each policy year without a break, we will continue to provide cover for new illnesses after the policy starts right into your cat or dog's old age. Our Premier Plus policy also provides cover for Third Party Liability (Dogs Only), Death from Accident, Boarding Kennel/Cattery Fees, Theft /Straying, Holiday Cancellation and Lost/Found ads. We also offer optional cover for Overseas Cover which includes Quarantine, Emergency Repatriation and Loss of Passport up to the aggregate limit.
Can I insure a pet of any age?
You can start pet insurance cover for your cat or dog from eight weeks until four years of age at inception of your policy. If you renew your cover each year without a break, we will continue to pay claims for ongoing conditions beyond four years of age.
Does an excess apply to my policy?
Yes an excess will apply to your policy when making a claim. The excess will vary depending on your policy and the type of pet covered. Details of the applicable excess can be obtained on page 2 of the booking process. The applicable excess will also be detailed on your Validation Certificate, which will be issued upon payment of the policy premium.
If my pet has been ill before, will this be covered by my insurance policy?
Our pet insurance excludes any pre-existing medical conditions of your cat or dog at the time of purchasing this policy. We like to be as clear as possible to our customers, therefore any exclusion from cover placed on your policy will be stated clearly on your validation certificate.
When does my cover begin?
Cover for injury will commence from the start date you choose when receiving a quote or booking the policy. Cover for any illness which develops within the first 14 days of your policy will be excluded. Please note that any medical condition your pet has prior to taking out your policy is also excluded entirely.
What is complementary treatment?
By complementary treatment we mean: Acupuncture, chiropractic manipulation, hydrotherapy and osteopathy. If you buy a Premier or Premier Plus policy we will pay for the cost of complementary treatment (up to the maximum benefit) that results from a valid claim under this insurance which your pet has received during the policy year for an illness or injury. All treatments must be carried out by a vet practice.
How do I make a claim?
If you need to make a claim please click on the claims button on our website or call the claims helpline on 0818 286521 Mon-Fri 9am-5pm.
Do you offer overseas travel for pets?
Upon payment of an additional premium overseas travel can be added to our Premier and Premier Plus polices.
Do you only insure cats and dogs?
Yes at the moment we are currently only insuring Cats and Dogs.
Can I get a discount for more than one pet?
Yes, if you have two or more pets and are insuring them at the one time under one policy then you are entitled to a 5% Multi-Pet discount. The discount is only available on our Premier and Premier Plus policies.
Is there a discount for having my pet micro-chipped?
Yes we offer a 5% discount off the Insurance premium for Premier and Premier Plus policies in year 1 only, providing you declare the microchip number when purchasing the policy.
Will pet insurance pay my vet fees direct?
We can arrange to pay most veterinary surgeons directly in the case of a vet fees claim. Please ask your vet if they are happy to do this, and we will take care of the rest.
How can I pay for my policy?
For a simple and stress free option, you can pay your premium by debit card, credit card or direct debit online or over the phone. A call centre fee will apply to policies issued over the phone.
Will Blue Insurance Limited automatically renew my policy?
We will aim to automatically renew (auto-renew)your policy when it runs out, unless you tell us not to. Each year we will notify you 6 weeks before the renewal date of your policy, and tell you about any changes to the premium or the policy terms and conditions.
If you do not want to us to auto-renew your policy, just call us on 0818 44 44 49, otherwise we will collect the renewal premiums from your credit card, debit card or by direct debit.
The automatic renewal service relies on your credit/debit card details still being valid or the direct debit still being active. If your credit/debit card details have changed within the last 12 months or the direct debit has been cancelled you must contact us to process the booking over the phone. If you do not receive confirmation of your new policy by your renewal date please contact us.
What charges do I incur when buying a policy?
We work hard to try and minimise any additional charges you may incur in the supply of your policy. We do not charge a web administration fee but if you choose to book your policy through our call centre an additional €4.95 call centre fee will apply. There are also optional charges linked to different administration functions such as the automatic SMS policy info service which costs €0.99.
