Whenever summer comes around, us Irish can end up a little disappointed with the hand were dealt. Rain usually visits us more than the sun and a holiday abroad is the closest we can get to experiencing a real summer. This year however, it appears we have been blessed with an unusual amount of heat and sunshine. Gardens are beginning to flourish and the weekends feel that little bit longer. With more sun forecast over the coming weeks, we thought we’d put together this garden party guide to help you organise the perfect get together.

People:

First things first, the people you bring will make the night a disaster or a success. Keeping a party small but with closer friends and family will always make for the best nights. Recruiting your very best friends for help with the prep and clean up is also crucial to keeping those stress levels down! Organising a garden party can be overwhelming, but when you can delegate some of the food items or some of the clean up to others, it makes it all that little bit easier.

Furniture:

You don’t have to spend a lot of money on new tables and chairs to host a garden party. Make do with what you have and bring the inside furniture outside. Pillows and throws are perfect for making your garden seem comfortable and inviting especially when the temperatures drop at night. Borrow excess furniture from friends and use the grass (if you have some) as an extra space where people can lie around. Don’t forget patio umbrellas and other sheltered areas as we all know only too well just how the weather can (and will) change at any minute.

Lighting:

Lighting is key to making your garden party memorable. Mason jars, fairy lights, chimineas, heaters etc will all add to the feeling of warmth and atmosphere once the sun goes down. You can pick up most of these items for only a couple of euros both online and in craft stores.

Music:

To add that last touch of atmosphere, you’ll need the perfect playlist. You can have the comfiest, warmest party with all your nearest gathered but this means little if you can’t keep the energy going with the perfect mix of songs. There’s nothing worse than a war over the “Aux cable” at a party where each person feels they’re a DJ. Do your research and have crowd pleasing classics like “Top Loader Dancing In The Moonlight” ready to go for when there’s a lull. Also keep any instruments ready in the wings if you’re the type who’s parties can end up in a sing song. Just please don’t be that person who plays Wonderwall three times on the trot.

Food:

This is always one of the biggest concerns for a garden party. In our experience, you really cant go wrong with some BBQ classics. Last summer, the Gastrogays gave us some wonderful ideas on how to give those BBQ staples a modern and exciting twist. You can also keep your visitors sweet with some regular canapes and late night snacks for those who’ll last till the early hours.

Drink:

Consider the masses when you’re choosing your drinks. Beer, Cider, Wine and popular spirits like Gin will always go down a treat with most people. If you’re feeling adventurous then try creating your very own fruit punch or strawberry daiquiris to cool down in the sun.

Once you’ve taken care of the above, all that’s left to do is relax and enjoy yourself! This summer is shaping up to be a great one and to help celebrate it, we recently launched our massive home insurance summer sale. We also currently offer some great savings on a 1 and 2 year car insurance policies too. For more news, offers and content don’t forget to follow us on FacebookTwitter or Instagram.
